The early bird better hurry!

Published about 1 year ago • 1 min read

Hello! This weekend I'll be in Brussels for the FOSDEM open source software conference. I'm looking forward to meeting up with the MuseScore team and community there. The event is free, and If any of you are in the area, feel free to drop by!

As most of you know, my new online course Mastering MuseScore 4 has been open since the release of MuseScore 4 itself in December. I've been running an "early bird" pricing special, and I've decided to keep that going for one more week, just through FOSDEM this weekend. After that the price goes up. If you've been considering enrolling - and I highly recommend it! - this is definitely the week to do it. I've made a little video to help you decide:

Mastering MuseScore

MuseScore Café

This week in the MuseScore Café with Marc Sabatella, we continue our first-Wednesday "ask me anything" series. Come prepared with your questions about MuseScore, and I'll do my best to answer!

The free MuseScore Café is live on Wednesday at 12:30 PM Eastern (16:30 GMT, or 17:30 during the winter months), and you can access past episodes in the archive.

Notation Projects

This is the last week for the simple piano piece we're entering into MuseScore.

Tip of the Week

MuseScore 4 makes generating parts for your instruments as simple as clicking the "Parts" button on the main toolbar followed by "Open all":

But you can also create parts containing multiple instruments, or parts from a single voice on a staff.

To learn how, see the full post in the Tip of the Week space.

Musicianship Skills

Music Master Class

This week in the Music Master Class with Marc Sabatella, I'll be broadcasting from the airport on my way to the FOSDEM event in Brussels, so I won't have access to my regular studio setup. But we can treat this as a special musical "ask me anything" session!

The free Music Master Class is live on Thursday at 12:30 PM Eastern (16:30 GMT, or 17:30 during the winter months), and you can access past episodes in the archive.

Musicianship Projects

Last week for the ear training (transcription) exercise we've been working on.

In Theory

Jazz musicians have a fascination with the tritone substitution, and classical composers have a similar fascination with the augmented sixth chord. In my Harmony and Chord Progressions course, I explain how these chords are defined and used, and I show how they are basically the same chord. If you're not already familiar with these, they are really powerful, and I encourage you to check out the course for much more about this

Meanwhile, though, to get an idea of how these chords sound, try playing through the following examples, all in the key of E minor:

For further discussion of these examples, see the full post in the In Theory space.

Hello! This week marks the first day of spring, and after the snowstorm we just experienced here in Colorado a few days ago, I'm ready! In the Practical Counterpoint course, we are continuing our exploration of so-called "species counterpoint". This is a subject that is often taught with little or no reference to any actual context, making it seem like an abstract concept with no relevance to real music. My aim is always to focus on the practical value of the theory, and species counterpoint...
